Can I order a single prototype PCB, or do I have to order a batch?

For a bare board, three is the minimum. Our Beautiful Boards are ordered in multiples of three, so a single PCB isn't an option. In practice the spare two earn their keep quickly: one for the bench, one for the drawer, and one for the revision you didn't see coming.

How is PCB pricing calculated, and what gets charged extra?

We price a bare PCB on a single dimension: the area of the board. Multiply that by your quantity and the rate for the technology you've picked, add the fixed Job Fee, and you have the price. There's no surcharge for the number of drills, holes or vias, so you can work out a rough figure in your head before you upload anything. The full formulas are in Our Simple Pricing.

How fast can prototype PCBs be manufactured?

As fast as you're willing to pay for. Every Beautiful Board order picks a service level: Budget is the standard lead time at the lower rate, Blitz moves your job forward for a higher one. With Blitz, 2-layer HASL boards are manufactured from 2 business days. That figure is manufacturing time only, before your parcel starts moving, so add the delivery estimate for your region on top. Other technologies take longer: ENIG and 4-layer boards more, multi-layer more again. Target and current figures for every technology and both service levels are on the Service Status page, which we keep updated as capacity shifts. One detail that catches people out: the deadline for design submission is 06:00 CET. Upload after that and your first business day starts the next morning.

How many layers and which surface finishes are available?

2, 4, 6 or 8 layers on FR4, with HASL or ENIG surface finish and several further options. Board thickness, copper weight, minimum track and gap and everything else you need before you route are set out in Technical Capabilities and Our Design Rules.

Do I need a solder paste stencil, and can I get one with my boards?

Only if you're reflowing; hand-soldering doesn't need one. If your project has paste layers, you can add a stencil to the same order, and we'll cut it to match the boards. One paste layer gets you a one-sided stencil, two get you both sides - we set that automatically from your design, so there's nothing to configure.

What happens if the board that arrives doesn't match my design?

The online rendering is a precise digital copy of what we're going to manufacture, generated from your native CAD data rather than a marketing mock-up. That's your chance to check we've read the design the way you meant it. If the board that arrives doesn't match the rendering you approved, we remake it at no cost.

Are PCBs electrically tested before they ship?

Every board is electrically tested before it leaves the manufacturing partner. You still get a bare board rather than a certified assembly, but shorts and opens introduced during manufacturing won't reach your bench.

Can I start with bare boards and have them assembled later?

That's the point of keeping everything in one project: Fill in the Bill of Materials and the same design becomes an Amazing Assembly order, or a Scalable Series run once the design is proven. No re-uploading, no second project, no starting over.
